When the Foodie Travels..

To my fellow foodies who not only have an insatiable appetite, but also an insatiable thirst for travel - just like me - Here's a blog post for you :)

Throughout my personal travels and also as a Travel Presenter, I've eaten quite some interesting / funky things - unique to my destination, and learned some priceless tips from the locals.  I've compiled some of the highlights of my shows in this short show reel on Food.

(In case the video doesn't appear above, you can click here)

There are a few more shows currently in the post-production stage, but when the time is right and ripe, I will update my blog and video. If you'd like to view the complete videos, you can check out my YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/kaylilum

In the meantime, here are some blog posts I've written to complement my travel shows (those pertaining to FOOD of course), and some bizarre foods encountered in my personal travels.  Enjoy!

King of Stink in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Here's a video I made - on the world's stinkiest fruit (well, I personally think it smells divine!!) and tips on how to get rid of the lovely smell after consuming it:

Trust me, that age-old method works!
Oh, in case the video doesn't appear above, click here to watch.

If you'd like to read about my filming trip in Kuala Lumpur with CCTV News' feature programme - Travelogue, you can read this blog post.

Peranakan Food in Malacca, Malaysia

'Peranakan'... 'Straits Chinese'... 'Baba-Nyonya'... They all refer to the same thing, essentially. The Straits Chinese are descendants of Chinese merchants who married the local Malay women when they settled along the Straits (particularly Malacca, Penang and Singapore). The men are known as 'Baba', while the women are referred to as 'Nyonya' (a corruption of the Portuguese word 'Dona', which means Lady).

To find out more about Malacca and the Baba-Nyonya culture, you can read this blog post, or watch my Travelogue on Malacca and Kuala Lumpur:

Street food in Penang, Malaysia

In my second episode of Travelogue on Malaysia, I suggested Gurney Drive as the place to go for local hawker fare in Penang. Yes, Gurney Drive is the easiest, most accessible place to have local food in Penang as all the highlights are located in one place... But over the years, Gurney Drive has become overly commercialised, with the quality of food going down.

There are TONS of other places where you can find better, more authentic local food in Penang, such as in Macalister Lane, Carnavon Street, Kimberley Street, Burmah Road, Chulia Street.... Seriously, just ask the locals for suggestions on where to find Char Kuey Teow, Curry Laksa, Hokkien Mee, Assam Laksa, Oyster Omelette, Cendol... O ma lorrrd... Just listing down all the food you can find in these streets, is already making my mouth water...!!  It's all about awesome local street food in Penang. Go explore!

To learn more about Penang, you can check out this blog post, and here's my Travelogue on Penang and Langkawi Island, filmed with CCTV News:

Food Haven in Guangzhou, China

I wrote a blog post specifically on FOOD in Guangzhou... Because it's worth it! ;)
